Previous articleJim Duquette discusses the legacy of Mike Flanagan
My heart goes out to Jim, Demper, and the rest of that great run of players I had the honor to grow up with, watch, and root for. The losing seasons get to me as a fan, but it’s nothing compared to this loss.
First, this is in no way a disrespect to Mike Flanagan so do not think that way.
Isn’t it terrible that a game, a simple game impacted someone so much that he took his own life? It goes to show you what the game of baseball means to us but how it ate at the heart and soul of someone so much that he felt compelled to end his misery and life in a drastic way. Something so miniscule in the grand scheme of life ate at Flanagan so bad that he ignored everything else and let this heartache of his take over and the demons won.
We all have heartache, hell, these last 4 years for me have been the worst of my life. I won’t go into details but there have been times that I wish they would end, though never the suicide route. There’s been many of times that I’ve given up. Walk through the day like a zombie. It doesn’t make me a stronger man than Flanagan. It just shows that what may not mean much to someone, its a life or death situation for someone else.
People may have seen Flanagan on the street and said something nasty to him about his tenure as GM never knowing that it was eating him up inside. I had an ex-girlfriend whom I lived with and I would do anything for and it ate me up for a long time after she split with me. She contacted me over a year later to go back out. I did feeling that I had a chance to get back together with her, only to be told that she was going out that night with me because SHE didn’t like the way we ended. Not anything about the way I felt, but about clearing her conscience.
So people don’t care how others feel about something personal in life or if it will send them over the edge, people only care about themselves.
That’s why I look out for myself, my family and friends. I’ve gotten in front of a friend when they were going to get their ass kicked by a larger individual, only to have the guy back down when I jumped in front (MGW can verify as it happened to a guy he knows also, B. Wolf). I’ll sit with you all night if your in a drunken stupor and can’t be left alone. MGW listened to me for months a few years ago without saying one word because he knew I needed to talk. I’ll never forget that because that could have been one thing that tossed me over that line.
Just remember, you can’t look out for everyone but you can start with family and friends and watch what you say and do to them cause it could just be the thing to throw them over the edge.
Mike Flanagan was a class act all the way around. He will definitely be missed.
Flanagan meant a lot to this town and the organization.
