That six-year, $66 million contract extension that Andy MacPhail signed Nick Markakis to has come to an end and the Orioles are expected not to pick up his $17.5 million mutual option for the 2015 season. So what does the future look like for the O’s right fielder?
Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors believes that the Birds may extend a qualifying offer Markakis’s way and projects that he’ll sign a three-year, $39 million deal. Without that QO, Adams thinks that Markakis could mark $48 million over four-years in “a weak market for hitters.”
MASNSports.com’s Roch Kubatko reports that the two sides are working on a new deal for the 31 year old and that “Both sides want to get a deal done.”
