If you looked really close at the picture to the right you can almost see Buck Showalter expressing emotion with a smile after his Baltimore Orioles upset the defending American League champion Texas Rangers.
Why shouldn’t he smile? The Orioles went from 69 wins to 93, won the AL Wild Card game on the road and beat Showalter’s former team. And not a single human on earth predicted his team could do any of that.
Though Showalter downplayed his emotions after beating the Rangers, the club that fired him in 2006, you know it had to be in the back of his mind. It was thinking about it all day. The day before too. Maybe even the night before that also.
That’s what makes Showalter so special though. We joke about his lack of emotion during the game and you see the difference between his style and Ron Washington’s, but it’s that relaxed mentality that I believe has helped changed the culture of the Orioles.
This team is playing like they have nothing to lose and for a franchise that hasn’t sniffed the postseason since most of their current roster was too young to drive a car, they sure are acting like they belong.
Credit Buck for that mentality.
