85 wins. 53 home runs. Third place in the AL East. That was 2013. What should we expect from the Baltimore Orioles this season?
Online casino Bovada has set the Orioles over/under win total at 80 ½. Last season the O’s matched their Pythagorean record at 85-77. PECOTA from Baseball Prospectus predicts the Orioles will win 78 games in 2014, as do FanGraphs preseason projections.
How about their chances in the division? Bovada has the Orioles as 7/1 favorites to win the AL East. At 78-84, PECOTA and FanGraphs project the Orioles to finish last in the division. If you’re a believer in the projection systems, you’ll probably stay away from the Orioles 16/1 odds to win the AL Pennant and 33/1 odds to win the World Series.
What about Chris Davis? His 53 dingers last season were an MLB-high. Bovada has him tied with Miguel Cabrera at 8/1 odds to lead the big leagues again in 2014. PECOTA thinks he’ll hit 26. ZiPS from FanGraphs thinks he’ll lead all of baseball with 41. Adam Jones has 50/1 odds to lead the league in home runs, PECOTA thinks he’ll hit 25, ZiPS projects 28.
If you can’t get enough of the preseason odds, you can wager on three Orioles to win the American League MVP. Chris Davis at 16/1, Adam Jones at 20/1 and Manny Machado at 33/1.
