The Baltimore Orioles traded Ryan Freel, fresh off the DL, to the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Joey Gathright.
Freel hit .133, but complained on several occasions about his playing time under manager Dave Trembley.
I liked the off season acquisition to bring in a utility player with experience, but in the end it just wasn’t a good fit for the O’s.
Kudos to Andy MacPhail for making this deal happen. He did so in time so the Birds didn’t have to send anyone down when Freel came back and signed Gathright, 28, to a minor league deal so he won’t take up a spot on the 25 man rotation.
Another good move by Andy Mac.
