On Monday before the NHL trade deadline, the Capitals added defenseman Dennis Wideman from the Florida Panthers for mid-level prospect Jake Hauswirth and a 2011 third round pick and Jason Arnott from the New Jersey Devils for David Steckel and the Caps’ second round pick in 2012. General manager George McPhee reacted to the acquisition at the Kettler Ice Complex on Monday afternoon.
“I thought we did really well in that regard. We did not give away a first round pick. We did not give away any of our ‘A’ prospects. We took a player out of roster that we love [Steckel], he’s just a great guy and he’s done really well for us here.”
Steckel, who I’ll remember as the guy that crushed Sidney Crosby in the Winter Classic, was drafted by Los Angeles, but came up with the Caps in 2005.
