The stats just don’t seem to line up in this one. Mark Hendrickson pitched two innings surrendered 5 earned runs, all in the 2nd inning, but the bullpen shut down the Rays.
Brian Bass got the win and combined with Danys Baez, Jim Johnson, and George Sherrill for 7 shut out innings of work. Kudos to Brian Bass for pitching 4 innings of work and basically saving this game for the O’s.
Adam Jones got things started early for the Orioles with a homerun in his first at bat of the game. It was a solo shot to left center giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead.
After the Rays took a 5-1 on Hendrickson in the 2nd the O’s fired back. Lou Montanez, hitting as the designated hitter for the night, drove in Melvin Mora. Brian Roberts hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Gregg Zaun. Then it was Adam Jones who hit a 3-run shot and gave the Orioles a 6-5 lead.
It was Jones’ first 2 homerun game and lifted his total to 8 homers, one shy of his season total for 2008. AJ is the real deal.
Baltimore lost 15 of 18 against Tampa in 2008, they’re 4-2 against them in 2009. The O’s are 4-2 on the home stand and look to sweep the Rays in the short two game series tonight.
