Though I still get offended when folks call the 2012 Orioles “lucky,” it’s hard for me to avoid calling them “unlucky” this season. A year ago, the Birds finished the season with a 29-9 record in games decided by one run. After last night’s loss to the Rays, the O’s are 14-22 in one-run games.
Teams typically finish around .500 in games decided by one-run, I suppose this is the Baseball Gods’ way of evening out 2012.
Thanks a lot, Baseball Gods.
I guess the good news is that statistically speaking the Orioles appear to be a better team in 2013 than in 2012, though their results are about the same.
What the hell am I talking about? It’s all about wins.
Good pitching beats good hitting most of the time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it sure would be nice to have an Ace pitcher to guarantee at least one win in this series,,,,,,,,,,,,Price didn’t have his best stuff still recovering from that injury, but he reached back when needed , that’s what an Ace does for a club,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Angelos wake up , you are cheating the great fans of Balto.
Not sure how an “Ace” was going to help them hit with runners in scoring position.
Did you ever think it was Price reaching back as an Ace that kept the bats silent when it counted ?
spy – Since when do you use an upper case “S” for your name?
Not sure this is really you, but I’ll play along…
Price, Cobb, Hellickson are all products of the Rays draft and farm system. Not a one of these “Aces” is a free agent acquisition.
I have been steadfast in my assertation that the Orioles need to invest BEAUCOUPS bucks NOT in free agents, but in scouting, drafting, and player development so that they can model themselves after the Rays.
Spending money on free agent pitchers is a waste of money. Spend the money, but spend it wisely.
I like Tillman, Gonzalez, Chen, and Norris. It’s a solid nucleus that will be around for at least 3 more years. I think there is “Ace” potential in all 3 of these guys. SPEND the MASN money on developing these guys.
Do the homework – free agent pitchers DO. NOT. WORK. Or more accurately, RARELY work.
Open up the Angelos Trust Fund and spend it on drafting, player development, and scouting, not overpriced average or below average pitching. I have brought up a million times about the $27 million that Ryan “Freaking” Dempster made this offseason. Do you really want to pay a career sub .500 pitcher with a near 5 ERA $13.5 mil a season?!?
MGW , it is me , don’t know why I did this ,,,,,,,,that being said , I actually agree with you 100%,,,,,,the problem is , it hasn’t worked like the Ray’s system and I thought it would be a nice thing for Angelos to do for us since the young group of position players was coming along,,,,,,,wouldn’t it have been nice to see a world series in Baltimore ?
Why is our pitching staff rated 25th in all of baseball ? Not sure we know how to develope quality pitching , guess I was doing a little bit of wishfull thinking,,,,,,,,,the older I get the more I dream of a world series right here……….
spy – you are correct, the Rays have not WON a WS with their staff, but are always competitive in the toughest division in baseball, the AL East.
But, in using my same approach, the SF Giants HAVE won 2 championships in the last 3 years on the strength of a homegrown pitching staff.
So perhaps th Giants would have better backed my comments.
Valid point as well. The hitting was the issue last night but I hear what Spy is saying. We’ve had this discussion too many times but I can always dream.
Night two against these guys,,,,,,,,,if you can’t see what an Ace does for your team I can’t help you understand why Angelos has cheated the fans,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I will say again , quality pitching beats quality hitting most of the time in a short series,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I can’t say it any better then that , you saw it again last night,,,,gggggeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..
4 runs one night, 3 runs the next…but it’s the PITCHING that’s the problem the last two games. How about a lack pf patience at the plate. TB’s starter through 80 pitches through 7 last night, and we went from the 3rd-6th innings without a hit. Jones and Roberts GIDP on the second and first pitches of their ABs in big situations. Same issue in the ALDS last year.
It’s difficult to hit with your hands around your throat…………….especially when quality pitchers are throwing the ball……………
