After 81 games (game 82 is being played as I type), the Orioles are-to this fan’s eyes-about where I expected they would be. Lingering somewhere near, but not quite at .500; improving in some areas and regressing in others. For the Orioles to get better, a few things have to happen.
First of all, the starting pitching has to improve. For far too many games, the starting pitching is failing to register a quality start. I don’t care what kind of offensive lineup you have, if your pitching can’t go at least six innings and give up 3 runs or less on something resembling a consistent basis, you don’t win baseball games. And this version of the Orioles isn’t the Murderer’s Row of the ’27 Yankees; nor is it resembling anything Earl Weaver had to work with during his pennant-winning years. The young arms have had some surprises: Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton have had their moments. However Brian Matusz has surely been a disappointment, and poor Jeremy Guthrie seemingly can’t win any games because when he does pitch well, the offense can’t get enough runs to support him. The second thing the Orioles will have to do is have some of those newly acquired bats to finally prove their worth. You can’t really complain about J.J. Hardy; he has done well, perhaps even exceeding expectations. Mark Reynolds, while not exactly wowing anyone with his defense at third, has proven to be a power threat in the lineup, having hit 20 home runs prior to the All-Star break. He has also cut down on his strikeouts and increased his walks, and his average-while not putting fear into the hearts of great hitters (or even average pitchers), is safely above the Mendoza line (for now). Certainly the bigger disappointments have been Derrek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero-but truly, both are on the downside of good-to-great careers. The Orioles took chances on both of them and so far, it hasn’t worked quite the way it was drawn up in the spring.
There are some bright spots with the offense as well. In addition to Hardy and Reynolds, Nick Markakis as of late has been hitting the ball well. Adam Jones has played well enough that many thought the Orioles’ lone All-Star spot would’ve been his…except that it went to Matt Wieters. Wieters has been solid all year, and is playing better now that the “savior” hype has died down. He hasn’t been all-world, but he isn’t the biggest draft bust in MLB history, either. The three of them may be the core (perhaps along with Nolan Reimold, if he can get off the bench to prove it) of future Orioles lineups that may get better in years to come.
The Orioles may well be headed for the franchise’s thirteenth consecutive losing season. Not sure that anyone was expecting anything else, but hopefully for once, the bright spots may actually be positives down the road and not more disappointments for the ballclub. After all, hope is the only thing fans can cling to when it comes to the Birds.
Seems like I have heard all this before , about thirteen times before,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,How can you or anyone actually have hope at this stage of the game ? The one constant in thirteen years has been Peter the Great , nothing else has to be said does it ? There is only one true hope and that is Peter the Great dies and the sons sell the team , this is the great fans of Baltimore’s only hope………………
Wake up people , the only thing that matters is the Angelos trust fund and it is doing very well these days with all that MASN money going into it………..
Sad when you believe they will grow the arms and buy the bats , you sad and funny people,,,,,,,,,,
Nice, Spy, now you are wishing death on people.
Nice, real nice.
After watching the Os this past weekend in Atlanta this is my current view. Markakis is the only Os player that could cut it on the Braves roster. He is a player. When you look for the “right make-up” in a player Markakis has it. Not many others do on the current roster. While young, Jones and Weiters are standing at the wall, but just do not seem to be able to break thru. What good does it do to have hitters like Hardy, Roberts, and Markakis, when the rest of the order can not get them across the plate. So I offer this for consideration. Look at the power numbers on Weiters and Jones. If the Braves or Phillies had those hitters in the line-up, their starters could take a blow in a game. Not the Os. There is no meaningful RBI production from the power slots. In games 1 and 2 at Turner Field, tell me the numbers. Finally in game 3 Show moves Reynolds up. Now why did it take game three to decide that when you have two former NL managers sharing your dugout. Reynolds has power, but you have to pick your moments. The Os have to learn to extend pitch counts and innings. Do you think Jones did. In game two, while still in doubt against Braves ace Kimbrel, where did righties Jones and Lee stand in the washed out box. The look at the left side.
No doubt the O’s struggle on the mound. What impact the resignation of Mark Connor has had on the starters during the past three weeks slide in the standings coupled with this long road trip is an area for discusssion. I think it is a contributing factor. But a case in point. When Braves alt catcher Ross took JA deep on a third pitch, you have to ask yourself what in the hell is Weiters thinking along with the manager and pitching coach. I’m back of the os dugout and could this coming. Go back and look at the pitches Arreita threw in that 5th inning. Well it goes back to the 4th inning. Plus Ross bunted in first at bat. The Os never seem to have any baseball savvy. It is not in their make-up. Now Markakis, how do you pitch this guy. He is savvy.
But Os do have a pitching coach who does know what a staff should look like. He saw the real deals in the Braves organization.
I think the pitching is coming over the hill, but the switch from Connor to Adair could not have come at a worse time. If Connor could have waited until after the All-Star break would have been better.
And having a pitching coach go to LSU did not help. Let’s face it if you are familar with SEC baseball, LSU developed a rep as a place where potential arms get burned out and lost. But the Os are in ACC territory, and we know what that is. A place where teams come from to the CWS and wimper out. There is no doubt the SEC is the premier college baseball conference. After watching many SEC games and then watching the Birds and Braves took about a game to adjust.
Watching the Braves and Birds go thru BP was like night and day. The Braves were loose, confident, and ready to play.
The big issue for me with the Birds. Where is the run production? Lee has to go. Guerra needs to go. I will say the Os pitchers take their batting seriously. That is a good sign. I thought all three starters pitched well at Turner Field, but they were aided by a generous strike zone. Perhaps even a Tillman could have gone deep in the game with that kind of zone. I would like to see better handling of pitchers in games by the pitching coach, manager, and Weiters. At some point run production has to come up and early in games for the young arms to grow and to work in.
Grow up Carl , I did not wish death on anyone,,,,,,,,,,,I simply stated that was the fans only hope , that should be obvious to you,,,,,,,,,,,the point was the only hope the great fans of Baltimore have is when Peter the Great is gone , this has become painfully obvious to most of the reasonable O’s fans , catch up or get off…………….
@spy –
Just remember the word kharma, my boy.
@ Carl,,,,,Kharma spelled correctly is Karma , try a bit harder next time,,,,,,,,,,FYI= misinformed westerners believe karma is about punishment , but it is not that at all……karma is simply the process of cause and effect , that’s it ….. if you move away from Buddhism and Hinduism and more into the realm of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I guarantee you will be a better man , try it…………..
@SPY – Man I was hanging with you there because you have some of the same views I do but I have to tell you that when you bust on one of my best, close friends (Carl), then I’m goina have to roll with him against you. I was trying to stay out of it hoping you would back off but you haven’t.
Word of advice @SPY, Carl is not one to be messed with as he is very educated in sports in fact to the point that he knows more than I do.
It’s things like correcting the spelling of “Karma” that make you look like someone who just came off a night of “tootin” the Columbian Marching Powder…
@spy –
Devote Christian Spy. Guess we’ve found common ground!
Just checkin in at the halfway point of another season where the O’s were gonna turn it around.
Solid outing tonight. Gave up back to back to back home runs!
Oh, and I love how Markakis and his 18 extra base hits is somehow “a player” while Jones isn’t.
11 million a year and this guy STILL gets a free pass?
Amazing.
I’m guessing McPhail hasn’t seen the latest debacles because they happened past his bedtime. I wonder if he’s gotten a cell phone yet.
What phase of “the plan” are we in?
I’ll check back with you all in August when I’m enjoying free dinners and free beer along with some cold hard cash.
@ Carl,,,,,,nothing like common ground my friend , I will take ‘The Intimidator’s’ advice on this one and apologize to you if you feel I was too harsh………….
@ The Intimidator,,,,,,,Some times I get carried away , sorry………by the way , I don’t do drugs and hardly ever drink…but my life is still wonderful…
To all,,,,,I’m so frustrated with the O’s I guess I carried things a bit too far…………Have a great day……….
@SPY – Great! Now lets go bash some Squeeler fans…
Don’t worry @SPY. Carl will tell you, but I am one of the biggest Oriole bashers around and I’m an Oriole fan. Unlike alot of the O’s fans who will spend money on a product that is garbage I call them out for the same old cheap ass, bandaid approach every year.
Just like I said at the beginning of the year and it looks like its going to happen again. But the O’s will AGAIN be looking for a;
1st sacker
DH
Left Fielder
SS (Looks like they won’t pay Hardy)
2nd sacker (Roberts is done)
Pitching (Which everyone said just wait for the young guys. Matusz is a sure fire #1)
If this team doesn’t sign Hardy and only because they need to or Izturis will be the starting SS next year then the fans need to stop giving them their money.
Next year they will go old and cheap again. Do another Duchscherer siging by going after Mark Prior or Ben Sheets. Go old and sign Jim Edmonds, Jim Thome, Omar Vizquel, Gary Mathews Jr., Jerry Hairston and Livan Hernandez.
Tell me which one of McFails trades have been great for the O’s? One maybe? Adam Jones for Bedard.
Now it looks like they won’t sign their #1 pick Al Bundy.
Hey guys…great to see the passion the Orioles evoke when posts like these appear at BSR. I am also frustrated that things haven’t progressed further or better than they have, even though the post sounds more positive than maybe the situation currently is.
As for Peter Angelos, I figure he’s in a can’t win situation. Yes, I too would love for him to go. He wasn’t always the villain though. When he bought the team, he was a hero because he was local and kept the Orioles in Baltimore when Edward Bennett Williams was making noises about moving them down 95 to DC. Then when the Orioles made the playoffs in ’96, he got some praise for vetoing a trade that would’ve sent veterans away for prospects, because the team made it to the ALCS. Then, after he ran off Davey Johnson and John Miller (in whatever order), he became Peter the Meddler. And when he was throwing money at any all-star he could get after the ’97 season, people wanted him to get out of the baseball business and leave the management of the club to his “baseball people.” Since then it has been all downhill.
I may be a bit older probably than most of you, so I can actually remember when the Orioles were a consistent contender. At this point, I don’t know whether they should blow the whole thing up again, or whether this “plan” will eventually bear fruit. The problem is, the “plan” isn’t going as fast as many of us wish it would. Fans are tired of the losing, tired of deals and prospects that don’t pan out. Before the losing seasons, Baltimore was a great baseball town. Hopefully one day it can be again, but it looks as though it is going to take more time than any of us want it to.
And yes, it is harder and harder to be optimistic after stretches like these, and annual swoons by June, with no meaningful baseball after the All-Star break.
Thanks for reading, mindpinball
As I see it , and I’m no expert , I believe the problem is ‘two fold’ , they can’t recognize quality young talent so they go after the older guys and flat out refuse to bring in the top tier free agents,,,,,,,,,,until these two things change it will just be more of the same……….As I sit back and reread this , I’m sure there are other things wrong as well…………
@ The Intimidator,,,,,,,,Thanks and I hope we have football so we can devour those squeeler fans……….
