High School Basketball: Charm City Classic All-Star Game This Sunday

It was a banner year for high school basketball in the Baltimore area.

Three Baltimore City programs won state titles (Dunbar, Lake Clifton, Patterson), and many local talents are going on to play college basketball at the next level.

To conclude the local season, Charm City Finest and Tunnel Vision Sports have organized the 1st Annual Charm City Senior Classic, taking place on Sunday, April 1st at St. Frances Academy.

The two-game event will showcase some of the top senior talents in the Baltimore area going up against high-profile hoopsters from around the nation. The first game begins at 4:30 and will exclusively feature unsigned seniors. The second game is slated to begin at 6:15, and features of a mix of players who have already committed to schools along with those who are nearing a final decision.

High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 10

The high school basketball regular season is coming to a close in Baltimore, and many of the top programs are now looking forward to their respective postseason tournaments.

Public schools finish their seasons this week and await the announcement of the regional playoff matchups for the MPSSAA state tournament. Privates brace for the MIAA and BCL playoffs.

The past few weeks, no team has been able to step up and take control of the top place in our rankings. Patterson returns to the top spot this week, after beating highly-ranked Lake Clifton and Edmondson in the past week. With the wins, the Clippers virtually clinched a spot in the Baltimore City Championship on Feb. 22 against Dunbar.

Mount St. Joseph’s had a big week as well, clinching titles in the MIAA and Baltimore Catholic League with an overtime win over John Carroll on Friday night.

Arundel remains unbeaten, as they’ve reeled off 20 consecutive wins this season.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. Additionally, because of the nature of these rankings, readers will notice considerable movement in the rankings each week. Rankings are released every Monday.

High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 9

It has been a crazy seven days in the Baltimore high school basketball scene, with our top three teams all falling victim to upset losses.

Dunbar jumps back to the top spot this week, but there truly is no top team in the Baltimore area this season. The Poets actually dropped a decision on Tuesday night to Edmondson, but become No. 1 by default. Patterson lost to Poly on Tuesday as well, and additional frontrunner Mount St. Joseph’s lost a 59-58 four-overtime thriller to unranked McDonogh on Friday night.

Arundel remains unbeaten, and is the only team in the area that still has not picked up a loss. Lake Clifton is probably playing the best basketball in the area, winning big decisions this week over City and Poly.

High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 8

After an awesome week of basketball in Baltimore, we have major shake-ups in this week’s BSR Top 15. The Basketball Academy was three days of great high school hoops action, as former #1 Dunbar fell, and Baltimore enjoyed several top-notch contests.

This week, Patterson surges back into the top spot in the rankings for the first time since the beginning of the season. The Clippers seem to be hitting their stride, and Saturday night’s 79-72 win over a very talented St. Frances squad showed that. The past seven days also saw two of the three remaining unbeatens in the area drop results, with Arundel holding strong as the only undefeated team in the Charm City metro area.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 7

It’s a tough day in Baltimore, and it seems that football is on the forefront of everybody’s minds in Charm City today. Regardless, it is Monday, which means we have another round of high school basketball rankings to release.

Dunbar is holding firm in the top spot, now 13-0 and one of only three unbeatens in the Baltimore area.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. Rankings are released every Monday.

High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 6

Welcome to the sixth installment of BSR’s weekly top 15 rankings.

We have a new top dog this week, as perennial powerhouse Dunbar has seized the top spot in our rankings. The Poets defeated then-No. 2 Patterson on Friday night, by a 64-55 score. With the win, Dunbar extended their active winning streak to 20 consecutive games, and now has the inside track to a Baltimore City League championship.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. Rankings are released every Monday.

High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 5

Welcome to the fifth installment of BSR’s weekly top 15 rankings.

Mount St. Joseph’s continues to hold the top spot in the rankings, but after their loss to underachieving Calvert Hall on Friday evening, the Gaels’ perch atop Baltimore has begun to dip.

I know it feels like I say it every week, but now we are really getting into the meat of conference play, where the contenders separate themselves from the pretenders. Several highly-anticipated league contests this week should lead to some major shake-ups in the rankings come next Monday.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. Rankings will typically be released every Monday.

High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 4

Welcome to the fourth installment of BSR’s weekly top 15 rankings.

This week sees Mount St. Joseph’s keeping the top spot in the rankings, despite picking up their first loss of the season in a holiday tournament. In fact, several of the metro area’s top teams lost while participating in tournaments over the break, and those losses have been reflected in this week’s rankings.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 3

Before we dive into the rankings, I’d like to apologize for the delay in posting them. I decided it would be best to let the holiday fervor die down before posting.

The top teams in this weeks’ rankings remain virtually unchanged, but the middle and lower parts of the top 15 will see a lot of changes. A couple new teams have been added, and the position of certain teams has changed quite a bit. It seems that at this point in the season, we’re starting to see which teams are a bit more consistent. Those teams will continue to hang around in the rankings.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or publicity surrounding their teams, but rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. High School Boys Basketball Top 15: Week 2

After a great week of high school basketball in the Baltimore area, our rankings will see a major shake-up. Several ranked teams fell, and a few unranked teams staked their claim for a spot in the top 15.

As will be the case all season, these rankings reward results, taking into account opponent strength and margin of victory/loss. Teams will not be ranked highly because of the hype or upside surrounding their teams, rather the consistency and impressiveness of their play. Rankings are released every Monday.

Patterson vs. Lincoln (NY): Notes and Impressions

Before the I-95 Elite High School Challenge, I told you that the Patterson-Lincoln game would be the highlight of the event. After a 71-66 overtime win for Lincoln that pitted two great scorers against each other, I can confirm that my assumption was correct.

Aquille Carr had 36 points for Patterson, and sophomore sensation Isaiah Whitehead had 25 points for Lincoln, but it was Whitehead who won out in the end. Patterson’s Shakir Brown hit a game-tying three pointer with eight seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, but Whitehead and Lincoln took care of business on defense in the extra period.

This was an instant classic; a very high-paced game with each team leaving it all on the court.
