A live timeline of developments in the Adam Jones contract talks with the Orioles.
9:22 a.m., Sun reporter Dan Connolly: According to a source: Adam Jones’ agent, Nez Balelo, is in Baltimore and Duquette and Balelo have had serious discussion about an extension
9:35 a.m., GM Dan Duquette tells MASN’s Roch Kubatko nothing imminent after re-confirming with him: “Duquette says again nothing ‘imminent’”
9:49 a.m., MASN’s Roch Kubatko says it doesn’t look like a deal will be announced today: “Seems apparent no announcement coming today regarding jones contract but obviously getting done. Duq and jones agent aren’t swapping recipes”
10:14 a.m., Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi write on Fox the deal will be “‘well north’ of the two largest deals in team history.”
10:58 a.m., Dan Connolly again, speculates that “Jones will sign an extension of five or six years in length worth $80 million to $90 million.”
11:40 a.m, Evan Massey of theFanatic.net, immediately after Rosenthal, says the deal will be done today. BSR can’t vouch for Massey’s credibility, so take it for what it’s worth: “The
#Orioles and Adam Jones will agree on a six-year deal worth around $85 million today, according to source.”
11:45 a.m., Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLB Trade Rumors hashes out the potential deal: “Deal between Adam Jones & O’s for six years, $85M or so per
@FOXSports. That covers final arb yr (likely $9-10M) plus 5 FA yrs @ $15M/ yr.”
12:00 p.m., Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com/Orioles.com confirms reports that the deal is indeed in the works. Notes that Jones completed his physical, which is club policy before singing a new deal.
12:51 p.m., Current Rockies and former O’s pitcher Jeremy Guthrie weighs in: “My boy
@SimplyAJ10 & city of Baltimore deserve a long-term deal as much as anyone in @MLB He gets better each day! #HardWork #Leader #5Tools”
12.55 p.m., Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting that the deal might actually be closer to $85.5M: “hearing adam jones and
#orioles are close on deal for 6 years, $85.5M (give or take a penny or 2)”
1:01 p.m., Heyman files a story that seems to reinforce credibility to the $85.5M figure (I know, I know, what’s $500k to Peter Angelos, anyway?)
1:21 p.m., Many folks pointing out that this is @SimplyAJ10‘s quietest day on Twitter in a long time. The habitual tweeter/instagramer’s silence could mean he’s about to sign, or it could mean nothing.
1:41 p.m., Plenty of chatter acting as if the deal is done. Again people, nobody credible has said this thing is gonna happen today.
1:52 p.m., our own Avi Miller tells us that “Jones usually gets to the park in the 2-3 p.m. range. But even then, I have seen contracts be announced right up until gametime if not during games or even after. His agent is doing most of that work, and since he had his physical already and has signed off on his agent leading negotiations, an announcement could come anytime really.”
2:09 p.m., the man himself tweets: “Wait till y’all all see the pet calendar this year from BARCS. Gonna be wild wit all these cool dogs and cats.”
2:16 p.m., Camden Crazies is saying that the deal is done, but links to the “closing in” story from MLB Trade Rumors this morning. Come on, guys.
2:46 p.m., Full Scale Sports is reporting: “The Orioles and Adam Jones have agreed to a contract extension of 6 years and around $85 million.” Again, more people jumping the gun and reporting that a deal is agreed to and final.
2:48 p.m., on ESPN Sportscenter they just ran a brief clip stating that the Orioles were “close” to signing Jones, according to their sources.
3:24 p.m., Burning Down the Yard joins the party in calling the deal done before it’s officially done. Includes the phrase “the fact that the deal got done.” Hope he’s right.
3:28 p.m., Steve Melewski from MASN spoke with Jones, following three tweets are Steve’s: Adam Jones: “I wish I could tell you more. There is nothing to tell you because there is nothing being done right now.”, Jones said his agent is in town. “Hopefully, I’ll have some good news for you, but right now I don’t, sorry.”, Jones on possible deal: “It would be cool, but if if doesn’t get done…..I don’t want to jinx anything.”
3:30 p.m., Dan Connolly again: “ Jones said hes not talked to owner Peter Angelos, but he would like to. Jones confirmed he was at Bayview Hosp Thurs. So physical occurred”
3:39 p.m., Melewski writes on MASN that the deal is not done yet: Jones “I’m not in their offices, I’m in my office in center field.”
3:42 p.m., WBAL’s Pete Gilbert again, after talking to Jones: [Jones] “was passionate talking about desire to win. He did take physical, tho adamant no deal yet, but talked like some1 who’s staying”
3:59 p.m., Jones will hit cleanup tonight against the Royals. Presumably under his current contract.
Saturday 7:40 p.m., Roch Kubatko tweets: “Adam Jones deal is done. Announcement should come tomorrow
#orioles.” Dan Connolly reports that Jones will receive a $2 million signing bonus, $8.5 million in 2013, $13 million in 2014 and 2015, $16 million in 2016 and 2017 and $17 million in 2018. That’s a total of $85.5 million for six years.
