There is no doubt about the vast array of young talent on the current Orioles roster. The only problem with most of the talent being young is that it may be tough to find someone who is going to step up and be the team captain, or leader, if you will. Usually it’s the veteran players who step up and take charge in the locker room. They take the young players under their wing and teach them the ins and outs of the game. But over the last few years, the Orioles haven’t had that player who has stepped up and been the guy everyone looks up to.
The last time they had a player like that was probably when Miguel Tejada was here. It wasn’t that Tejada was the hard-nosed vocal leader of the bunch, but he had a fun and easygoing personality, which made it easier for guys to talk to him about anything. It’s much easier for a young player to ask advice of a guy who he knows is easygoing and knowledgeable rather than a guy who is demanding and knowledgeable.
That being said, I think Tejada will once again be the leader in the O’s locker room in 2010. He has been a part of the organization before and even though most of the players that are here now weren’t here during his last tenure, I think they will rally around him just like the last time he came here. Granted, some players may not trust him as much because of the whole steroid fiasco, but I don’t think that will affect his leadership qualities at all. Tejada is a 13-year veteran, so he has pretty much seen it all. I think he’ll be a great mentor for the younger guys trying to make a name for themselves in the big leagues.
One player who I think will benefit the most from Tejada’s presence and will eventually take his place as the team leader is Adam Jones. Jones has a similar personality to that of Tejada in that they both truly love the game of baseball. They both have exuberant personalities on and off the field and people are drawn to them. They always seem to have smiles on their faces and they don’t treat the game like it’s just their job. They look at baseball as a privilege and they appreciate the fact that being a professional athlete is one of the best jobs in the world, and it shows.
Even though I think Tejada will be the O’s leader this season, Jones has the potential to be the club’s future leader. He has all the ingredients to become a player that people around the league talk about. Jones is what they call a five-tool player, a guy who can hit for power, hit for average, has speed, can field his position and has excellent throwing ability. In addition to being a five-tool player, he also has the swagger to be a superstar in this league. He rides that very thin line between confidence and cockiness while managing to stay likable. When you combine all of the above factors with Jones’ determination to make everyone around him better, you get a leader. There is no doubt in my mind that Jones will be the leader of this team one day, but a year or two of watching Miggy will benefit him in preparing for the task.
Steve – nice column.
It seems a shame that a guy like Roberts is unwilling to step up and assume the leadership role. He has the onfield presence, but I guess just not the moxie to take on that role. Again, he seems to have the easy-going, yet intense make up, but just isn't the kind of guy who is naturally a leader.
I agree that Tejada could assume that role this summer, and I hope he does. I think he's a guy who really enjoys the game and his teammates. Hopefully, that will be infectious.
I also think Jones could assume that role unless the media continues to undercut him. I'm already tiring of the media trying to portray him as a "prima donna". The guy says a lot of things "tongue-in-check" that can be misconstrued in the printed media. Just watch an interview with the guy or engage in a conversation with him before the game.
I think thats you are right, Tejada will be the leader. He said during Spring Training that during his first time in Baltimore, he didn't think the team was ready, and he knew that they weren't going to do well. When he came back for this season, he realized that the Orioles were on the brink of having success and doing well in the AL East. I think that when he saw this, it motivated him to want to lead the team, and teach the young guys who he knows will lead the Orioles into the future, like Jones, and help them become leaders.
I think that he has what it takes to lead the Orioles and just like when the Orioles brought in Millwood to mentor the young pitchers, bringing in Tejada may have the same benefit.
In the next few years, our young pitching staff may think back to what they will be learning this year, and it can't hurt us. It will be great to see what Tejada and Millwood can teach our guys and hopefully they can bring a positive attitude into the clubhouse and then onto the field. Once the team gets going, the city of Baltimore will respond, and there will again be "a thundering roar from 34 to give it all they've got". This city loves baseball, and having this mix of great vets and promising young kids is exciting
I've got to disagree. I wanna be held accountable for this one. Adam Jones will be the leader of this club. The o's needed him to have a successful year to gain his voice in the clubhouse. Last year he hit the game winning RBI in the all star game, he's a gold glover and outspoken about his desire to win. Jones is the new leader over Tejeda because Jones is here for the long haul.
Sent from my iPhone
Tejada? Millwood? Jones? Come on people…. Think…. Tejada and Millwood are trade bait at the deadline and will only be here 3 1/2 months. Not enough time to establish the "Leader" aspect.
STD once said that he thought Gonzalez would be the leader because he heard him talk once. Now he's flipping and didn't even mention him.
Pole – Verify that for me good buddy…
Jones could be but nobody knows yet. Plus you have to take in the loss factor. Once losing sets it again then the whole clubhouse will be in the dumps and no one will want to take control. Right now it has to be either Jones, Markakis or Wieters but not until the beginning of next year.
STD – Yes the fruit fly you sent me is still living in his cage. Can you get me a mate for him so I can breed them?
I think Gonzalez can be a leader in the bullpen, not for the club. How's a relief pitcher going to be the clubhouse leader?!?! Even the great Mariano Rivera is NOT the leader of the Yankees, Jeter is…
Yeah Gonzo can't be the leader.
HEY! I actually KIND OF agree with 2488. Tejeda isn't a leader. He's a 1-2 year guy.
Jones is here for the long term though.
What Section 86 says makes sense. It is going to take time to figure out who is going to lead this team. In the mean time Tejada is a possible candidate and might only be leading until the cream rised to the top. Time will tell.
Pole – Glad to see you on here and are a voice of reason… You see STD for what he is, a Soup Kitchen wannabe… I've seen STD play ball and he's no Soup Kitchen… Heck, I seen Soup Kitchen play ball and he's no ball player!
Pole and I are the glue that holds these threads together…
Pole is Diamond in the Rough and I am the women's pet and the men's regret….
Anyone who thinks Markakis is gonna be a leader needs to find someone else.
Tejada? Sweet Jesus people.
This is gonna one long ass season.
Again…………
I'm going to throw my hat in the ring for Ohman to be the leader of this team. Why the hell not?
i am ok with that, i just dont know who he is well enough personality wise and with his vocality. all for it if it would work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZWjdDTjtXw
Yeah I've heard all about his big personality. But c'mon guys…bullpen guys aren't clubhouse leaders!
AJ 2010!
Ohman? Is that your final answer?
lol zach, i guess, but hey mariano and paps are contributors!
ohman is on the mound now second night in a row.
i still go with jones, the guy ive touted all offseason.
Agreed.
Yeah I agree Tejada is not the guy. He might bring some energy to the club from day to day, but not a whole lot of leadership. I think there are different types of leaders that a good club needs. There needs to be star players that are vocal leaders, or that are leaders in front of the media. But there also needs to be guys that lead by getting in someone's face when they screw up. Not in a public way, but in a way that does not allow sloppy baseball to continue.
Unfortunately, the O's have not had many of those guys in recent years. I am not sure who fills that role now. I think Matt Wieters could be that guy because he is understated, but does things right. In other words he won't make a fool of a guy who screws up, but he can hold guys to a standard.
That type of leadership can take time to evolve and works better when a core of players has been together for a while.
Marky Mark – Glad to hear from another voice of reason when it comes to the Birdies… Big closer acquisition blows it the 1st game of the season…
Trembley will not last all season… In fact, if this team starts off something like 8 & 25 I can see him gone real soon…
C'mon, I'll admit it was disappointing to see Gonzo blow that lead…but you can't base your judgment on the guy based on last night. Not even you believe that.
i give him this series to prove it. if he would do that same thing again tonight. expect tomrw for another guy.
2488: trembley is here to stay this year unless its horrendous. give the team time to gel. andy has said he is giving skip a chance, and 33 games thru isnt a complete chance. let him be evaluated at least through 81.
Hey boys, sorry for missing this whole conversation.
I see it being Jones soon enough. I know Tejada or Roberts would be nice too, but also how about Markakis? He never talks, and could help out a lot.
But Jones is a good pick, young but is treated like a veteran in that he is talked about as if he is so experienced and all. He is, and being young, can do it. He is CF, so he sees it all and can really help. Plus, he is only getting better at baseball too.
I think that the guys in the locker room know that he will be a leader, and because he has the experience, and he is treated like a vet, he will be a guy that everyone can relies on. I like the choice of Jones, and I think that with this, the future is bright, and with Jones leading the guys, this season will be a successful one.
The other players will rely on Jones, just like he will rely on the rest of the guys to lead the team with him. It takes a whole team to do well, and I don't think that with Jones at the helm, that he would let the team fall apart like other teams have.
I completely agree section86! Jones had to prove it to himself and to the fans and he did that last season. He's the face of the franchise and it's well earned.
it sure is. even in the new MASN commercials he is promoting the idea of team, and not the individual awards, and I know that there is a script for those, but I have to believe that he thinks the same thing, which is great!
dont speak positively of masn commercials. never again since bergesen's lol (will they ever release that one?)
but im just kidding, i love the commercial and what he says. his mama is sure proud of him!
yea well, there are good commercials, and bad ones. and ones that ruin everything lol
Yeah I wouldn't expect to see Markakis be the vocal leader of the clubhouse. Not that he doesn't have the talent, it's just not his personality.
I'm telling you guys, it's AJ all the way!
i also like lugo now to help out with things. He was on the red sox world series team, and has played with ortiz and manny, and pujols and holliday last season and this spring too. he brings tons of experience. he also is excited to be here. he took swings pregame today and looked good. he was seen earlier today coloring in the white parts of his cleats with orange sharpie and ordered orange spikes to put in too. it shows his commitment and excited to be here. i love it.
Zach – I don't know what I believe anymore. I've been so confused lately…
I mean things like:
Is the white stuff better tasting than the caramel in "Caramel Creams"?
Is "John Q. Public" really that guys name?
Am I really living in this time or was I transported back here in a "Time Machine"?
Did Bill Murray really almost fail "Army Training" because he came close to sleeping through the graduation?
Do M&M's really melt in your mouth? How can you tell?
Are "Water Buffalo" really made out of water?
Who shot the Sheriff and why didn't he shoot the deputy?
2488, I wish I had the answers for you. All I know if that at the right temperature those thin candy shells melt and the chocolate melts when it isn't in your mouth.
Also, I prefer the caramel, but that's just me.
i also think its funny how people bring tejada into it. noone understands him when he talks lolol
And this is all great, because you should always have the discussion about having more leaders and who will be the overall guy, rather than not having a leader, and needing someone to step up. I think that for the first few months Tejada will be the outspoken guy, and once Jones and Markakis and Roberts see him, I tihnk that they will take over and become leaders. All 3 of those guys are here for many years to come and will be the core that we build our team around. It will be great to see them as leaders, both on and off the field. They all love the fans, and they want to win championships. Our team is not out to win individual awards, as great as they may be, but instead, we're going back to Orioles Magic.
2488,
STD did make the above statement. He makes irresponsible statements all the time then tries to retract them.
The O's don't have any leaders to date. Either they are 1-2 year guys, don't have the personality, or haven't been in the league for long. Hopefully Jones grows into that role because he appears to be the most likely candidate.
which is again the reason that Tejada is such a great addition to not only the lineup, but also the clubhouse. he may be a one year guy, but he was here before, and he is here this year. He will be able to take Jones under his wing and I'm sure that this year we will see Jones become a more vocal part of the team. I think that he has it in him, and when it finally comes out, the team is going to be riding on such a great high because of it. He is ready, and now he had that mentor to show him the ropes.
Jones is becoming that guy. By the end of the year he'll be the vocal leader of this club. Keep him healthy and he'll return to All Star game, might even win another GG. All that builds confidence which builds a voice for AJ.
I like it! He wants to win and the O's have needed a leader for a while!
Interesting, yet sad thread…Good evening to all from Ol' Bruz…Who are the Leaders around baseball? Once you get past Jeter and Varitek, who else is there? Who was the leader the last time the O's were good? Certainly not selfish Cal…Anyway, O's clearly don't have a leader…Haven't had a leader…Do they need one? I guess. Maybe if Millhouse turns out to be half the guy Sutcliffe was back in '92? In other news, lets just all be thankful the O's still employ the best hitting coach in all of baseball — the one man who can absolutely, positively, not be fired or replaced. Ever! Other good news is the Guthrie didn't embarrass himself (hey Sheila, I'm trying to find the bright side)…Final note…There are still 70 wins out there in front of us!!!
O come on Bruz
Crow has the magic touch, didn't you know?
The Crow is the Honorary Hitting Coach on my BSR Fantasy Baseball Team, that's for sure! Even heard today on one of the local AM stations that the O's led the AL East in average with RISP in 2009, so see!
They did.
Of course they were 16th in the league in runs scored with RISP because they had some many fewer chances!
They are a combined 3 for 21 with RISP in two games this season.
new post on the O's game tonight:
http://opacysection88.blogspot.com/
2488/Mark/Ol Bruz,
You guys have spoken the truth bros when it comes to this team. It will probably be a long season. All I can look to at this point is:
Jones grows into a leader
Weiters shows improvement on last season
Matusz/Bergesen/Hernandez/Tillman make a contribution and show promise
Reimhold learns how to play left field
Banana Cream Pie learns how to throw the ball without hurting himself
BRob gets a hit
Atkins doesn't make use think fondly of Huff
jones- agreed
wieters, all he needs work is gelling, idk if you will see per game stats go up really
those pitchers, they need the Ws for that i think, low whip is a confidence boost too
reimold will be out of lf by the end of the season i bet
pie– thats just once, although my status the other day was: why is pie never healthy?
brob should sit tonight and lugo should start
atkins can hit .250 if he can give us 20 hrs
add to it.
markakis keeps up gold glove caliber and the solid average
bullpen keeps era low
rotation pitches deep into games.
