He’s no Yoenis Cespedes or Jorge Soler, but the Orioles made a splash in the international market on Wednesday by signing Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia to a minor league contract with a $778,500 bonus.
Urrutia is a 25-year-old corner outfielder who spent his past three seasons in Cuba’s top league. According to Baseball America, Urrutia is a 6-foot-3, 180 pound switch hitter with a solid, level stroke that produces line drives.
“He has solid bat-to-ball ability and average power,” Ben Badler at BA writes. “He’s a good athlete for a corner outfielder and just around an average runner. He could begin his career in Double-A.”
He batted .397 with 12 home runs in 305 at-bats in 2010.
ESPN Keith Law says he’s “nothing special,” but he isn’t a big fan of much that the O’s do.
Orioles made a splash in the International market within the past year when they signed that 17 year old New Zealand softball player, Pita Rona. That was a great signing…
Can’t wait till they sign that 14 year old Badminton sensation from Portugal…
Nobody even heard of this Henry Urrutia guy and obviously no teams were going after him since the Orioles got him. So the guy is 25 years old which means he’s really 29, he’ll spend 3-4 years in minors and make his debut for O’s at age 33… Great find Orioles!
I’m still waiting for the O’s to sign a top tier player,,,,,,,when is the last time the O’s signed a true ‘impact player’ ,,,,,,,,oh that’s right , when they signed Sammy Soso………..
They are actually in the hunt thanks to the division falling apart , since this will not happen again in the next ten years or so wouldn’t you think they would take advantage of the situation and sign an impact player to try to win,,,,,,,,,,,I guess they are the same old O’s………..
