“In my baseball experience, rumors and stories seem to break when things aren’t going well. Let me address recent media reports.
“First I want to say that Mr. Angelos never said that he didn’t want me to get credit for any success that the club might have. That’s just not true.
“I have had a very good relationship with Peter for a long time. He has been an advisor to me, a great supporter of my foundation and it is because of him that we have an Orioles affiliate in Aberdeen.
“I have met with Andy and Peter on a number of occasions to discuss many subjects. Ultimately our discussions have turned to baseball, the Orioles and me. I have enjoyed those talks very much, and yes the subject has been broached about me potentially joining the organization. I look forward to those talks continuing.
“I have been consistent in my statements about a return to baseball since my retirement in 2001. With my son Ryan approaching the end of high school in a couple of years I have been thinking more seriously about a return to the big league game. I am more excited now to explore all opportunities and find the right situation that could lead me to the next phase of my life.”
Looks like Ken Rosenthal may have taken this story a little too far. Feel better now?
Those who want to feel better didn't feel that bad to begin with. Those who wish the original story to be true will spin this anyway they can to support it.
People will spin it, thats why it was reported the way it was initially. People hate Angelos and will take any story to bash the guy. Honestly, can't blame anyone for wanting to take things out on him, he has driven this team to the bottom of the barrel.
Its not the first time a story has been published on Cal and Angelos and how they may not see eye-to-eye. Rosenthal was a good beat writer for the Sun a long time ago and probably still has legit contacts in this town. BUT, one thing i can't stand about the guy is that he makes a whole lotta nothing about something. His campfire stories he publishes are nothing but hot air.
I agree with you Clark. I hate when writers make something out of nothing…it's too easy to do that right now with the O's early struggles.
For the record, I'm in the camp of "manager means little-to-nothing" on a winning baseball team. If you stick Cal in the skipper's seat, it can be good for the fan base if the team wins. If the team continues to lose, slotting him in the manager's spot of a losing team does nothing but tarnish the man's image.
Since I personally think the GM we have is a better personnel guy than Ripken (just guessing, I have no idea how Ripken is as far as the business of baseball, but I'm guessing not as strong as Andy), what WOULD the O's do with Ripken that would be in any way meaningful? Infield coach? Consecutive games-playing consultant?
I love the man, and maybe I'm being too narrow-minded, but I just don' t know where I would see such a partnership benefiting either party.
I couldn't have said this any better Dave. Players win games, not managers. Joe Girardi wouldn't have sent this team over the edge.
I don't know where Ripken would fit into this organization at the moment. If MacPhail becomes the commissioner than we can have this conversation..but for now I don't see how he could truly benefit this team.
He could get a group together and buy the team from Angelos. This team and city deserves some fresh air with this organization. Get a different ownership group and start from there.
I just have a tough time thinking that's a realistic solution. "Get a group together…"
Be careful what you wish for…Angelos, the one everyone sees as the conspirator here, could sell the team to someone with the wherewithal to buy them, someone like Phil Knight of Nike fame. The Oregon Orioles…how's that sound?
Sometimes Zach, players make good managers. It is about time the Orioles give some of their past champions a chance to do it again. Why does Baltimore seem to discard their great players after they retire from playing? These guys know how to be successful…….Do you not think with all of that experience they would have a good chance of applying the same kind of work ethic and be successful in another specialty in the game?
Dave,
I'm of the opinion that a manager sets a tone. Trembley manages scared and therefore his team oftentimes plays scared. Not saying Cal's the right guy, far from that, I just don't believe Trembley to the the right guy.
Probably doesn't help his cause that his name is Trembley.
Zach – you think Pole wearing womens underwear is unrealistic but he wears them… Is that a solution to his manhood problems? Not really but these things are realistic.
Dave, you said your "in the camp of "manager means little-to-nothing"… What camp is that? Camp ImAClown? Who cares what Camp you attend? This site is about sports and not about the Camp you attend. What, did they give you some time off between games of "Kickball" and "LaserTag"? You finished your macramie tissue box and you had a little time to write on the blog? Go tell Counselor Lenny you aren't using your time to its full potential and ask him if you can help out the games coordinator schedule the "Tetherball" Tournament for later in the week. Man! You come on a sports blog and write about your camp experiences.
I like playing capture the flag at camp.
Uh oh, someone got picked last in kickball. Or macramé class.
I was talking about what I thought needed to happen to the team to turn this around, not necessarily what would happen. Fine, Angelos stays as the primary owner, the O's continue to have a losing record year after year. Oh boy, can't wait until next spring training!
Angelos has NEVER given indication he is selling the team, so why debate it? Do you want to start a petition to get Angelos to sell? That should work! Forbes just listed the Orioles value at $376 million, for all those pining for Cal to buy the team, he doesn't have that kind of money. Local investors? You mean like Tom Clancy, Pam Shriver, Steve Geppi, Barry Levinson, George Will, the McKay family? They are all already owners of the team. Geppi is facing financial hardships, Ed Hale just had a building foreclosed. John Peterakis? Oh, he's wearing orange, jumpsuit orange.
Excuse me but what did Cal say that disputes or puts to rest the story that Rosenthal published?
If the story was some complete fabrication as some with their heads in the sand would like to believe than you can bet every last cent you have that Angelos would've already filed a lawsuit in court.
But he didn't and he also used a whole lot of lawyer speak and double talk when he responded to the story.
After everything this man has done to the team through his ego why is this so hard to believe?
No Zach, I don't feel better because Rosenthal is standing by his story and neither Cal or Angelos said anything that tells me Rosenthal is wrong here.
Once again many are missing the point.
It's not about Cal. It's about the ego driven owner who cares only about being right and making money.
I agree that Cal won't fix this team. Too bad that's not the problem.
Mark should be talking about the time he went to camp. He has no evidence that that Rosenthal's story is true. Sure he is standing by it. Did you really believe that he would say that he fabricated the whole thing. One thing you do have right though is Angelos' ego and his interest in making money first.
Mell
If the story is fabricated then why hasn't Angelos or Ripken said so?
Read their comments. They don't address Rosenthal or his claims head on.
If it's completely untrue then King Pete would be out in full force with law suit in hand.
What's more likely to you? Ken Rosenthal makes up a story out of thin air and puts his reputation on the line by not only having it front page on Foxsports but also standing by it and not issuing a retraction.
OR
Some people leaked what happened and caught King Pete and Cal completely off guard.
I know what one I'd put my money on.
