The Washington Capitals signed right wing Alexander Semin to a one-year, $6.7 million contract extension on Thursday morning. Corey Masisak of NHL.com tweeted that Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom have become the higest cap hit for 3 players in the NHL in 2011-2012 at $22,938,462.

Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post tweeted that Capitals GM George McPhee said that he offered Semin a multi-year deal, but that the winger wanted to tack a one-year extension with Washington.

3:40 PM UPDATE: Kattie Carrera of the Washington Post said that Semin was offered a maximum of two years by the Caps because of the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement being set to expire after next season.
