Well how about that?
Orioles number one starter Chris Tillman currently ranks second among starting pitchers in ERA on the young season. After three starts, Tillman’s 0.84 ERA is just a tick behind Yu Darvish‘s 0.82 mark. He’s thrown just two thirds of an inning less than the Rangers ace.
FIP has been a lot less kind to Tillman. At 3.28, Tillman ranks 44th in Major League Baseball in FIP on the young season. He’s limited opponents to a .206 BABIP, 14th in the league, and .188 batting average against, 22nd.
Yay, small sample sizes!
Tonight in Boston, Tillman faces Red Sox starter John Lackey. Over 12 starts against the Red Sox, Tillman has posted a career 2.67 ERA, 1.262 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 and 2.52 K/BB. He’s posted a 2.37 ERA, 1.253 WHIP, 8 K/9 and 3.38 K/BB in five starts at Fenway Park.
Thanks to Steve Melewski for tweeting the ERA stat.
