David Lough - Baltimore Orioles left fielder

The first couple weeks of the 2014 season haven’t gone David Lough‘s way. The Orioles left fielder is slashing .125/.176/.188 after playing in ten of the team’s first 14 games.

Buck Showalter has had Lough hit in six different spots in the Orioles lineup, though he has seen the most action in the leadoff role.

We have yet to see Lough record a hit on a ground ball. He’s also 0-for-2 in bunt attempts on the young season.

Lough has shown improved plate discipline numbers over his first ten games. He’s swinging at 25.4 percent of the pitches he sees outside of the strike zone, down nearly ten percent from last season, and making contact with 81.3 percent of those pitches. Additionally, his zone swinging is up to 70.8 percent with a 89.1 percent contact rate.

So what’s caused the slow start? Lough was nearly placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 9 while the Orioles were in New York for concussion-like symptoms. He passed his tests in Baltimore, but has struggled to find consistency at the plate this season.
