The Baltimore Orioles seem to be quietly lurking in the shadows of the 2012 Winter Meetings. Roch Kubatko of reports that the O’s are seeking a power bat and it’s not a question of “if” a trade will happen but “when” a trade will happen.

Billy Butler seems to be a guy that most Orioles fans would like to see in Baltimore. I received a number of tweets about him on Tuesday.

If the Royals are asking too much for Butler, Michael Morse could be a good option. He could play both first base and left field and is good for 25-30 home runs if he stays healthy for the whole season. Jon Morosi of reports that the O’s are interested in acquiring him.

The Nats are certainly interested in re-signing Adam LaRoche and if they do, Morse will likely be moved.

As Rich Dubroff of reports, Washington is looking for bullpen help this winter. The O’s could part with a guy like Tommy Hunter or Pedro Strop as part of a deal for Morse.

I’m a Morse fan and think he has monster opposite field power. If the price is right, I’m all for bringing him to Baltimore.

  1. Zach must be bored talk about the Ravens, he’s pulling stories about the Orioles to fill space on this site. Why the heck would they need this guy if #1, the resigned McClouth and #2, we have Davis that could fill the first base void.

  2. Your numbers are based on one year. That’s not consistent enough to go after one guy that will only crowd a position. I’d rather see the O’s waste their time and money on areas of need like pitching.

    • Um, Dude, Morse is a career .295 hitter, averaging 23 homers and 82 RBIs over 8 MLB seasons. What are you talking about, on year?!

      • That reference you’re refering to is, in the words of baseball-reference, “This is an attempt to condense each batter’s career into a single season’s worth of stats…. ” and an ATTEMPT to show a potential 162 game average.

In eight seasons, he’s played sparingly with the most consistent years coming with the Nationals – the last three. Of those three years, only once did he approach 162 games, the other two about 100 games. Based on his salary for last year, and potential for the coming years cause of service time, you would think the O’s might take that 3.5 – 5 million and spend it on area of need .. like pitching and not another back-up. If they got him at a lower price, maybe 2 million or less, then so be it. I don’t see that happening though as inflation runs rampant in baseball.

  3. The Intimidator
