In the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl Thursday night, the Navy Midshipmen (9-4) had a chance to improve to 10 wins for a second consecutive season, but the San Diego State Aztecs (9-4) had a say in the matter.

San Diego State got off to a fast start, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and forcing Navy to play catch up the rest of the game. Navy is a strong running team, built to play with a lead, but because of the Aztecs’ big lead, the Midshipmen didn’t stand much of a chance, falling 35-14.

All of Navy’s points came in the second quarter. One touchdown came on a 30-yard strike from quarterback Ricky Dobbs to Greg Jones cutting San Diego State’s lead to 14-7. The Aztecs scored again making the score 21-7. Finally, Dobbs ran the ball in from one yard out to give Navy their final score of the game.

Navy had trouble containing San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley who was deadly accurate. Lindley completed 18 of his 23 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t turn the ball over.

Dobbs struggled throwing the ball completing just nine of 15 attempts and turning it over once on an interception. He did, however, lead the team in rushing with 107 yards on 24 carries.
