Fantasy Football Week 10 Pickups

At this point in the season the goal isn’t necessarily to find long term guys. If you have struggled to find permanent starters all year long your probably not currently in a playoff spot. If you do have a good group of regulars then your probably preparing for the playoffs and are looking to add depth. For this reason it is important to start paying attention to guys who have good matchups down the stretch. Stashing a guy for a possible play 3 weeks away is okay if your starters are pretty much the same guys each week. It’s also good to add guys who could get an increased opportunity at the end of the season. These guys, who you know will succeed, will be the best backup to your starters incase disaster hits. Here are the guys who are in those situations and are immediate good pickups:

Andy Dalton (CIN QB)- He is officially a backup QB that I would trust plugging in. He has two tough matchups in a row coming up against PIT and BAL, but he also has good matchups left against CLE, HOU, STL, and ARI. He plays STL and ARI during the fantasy playoffs. He’s a guy I’d want sitting on my bench for the playoffs incase my starter went down.

Sam Bradford (STL QB)- He struggled a bit in first game back with 265/0/1 but that was to be expected. But aside from the last 2 weeks he has a very easy schedule coming up. He also has a legit WR in Brandon Lloyd that he will develop chemistry with. He could finally have success next week against SEA. After that he gets ARI, SF, SEA, and CIN. All favorable matchups.

Flacco ranks 22nd in Sports Illustrated’s midseason QB rankings

Uhoh.

Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter just pissed off the entire city of Baltimore.  In his midseason quarterback rankings, Trotter ranked Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco 22nd in the NFL.  22nd as in 10 from the bottom.  …Way down there.

As Dave Gilmore points out, this isn’t the first time that the national media has been critical of Flacco.  Bill Simmons practically called Ravens fans cry babies for their defense of Flacco.

22. Joe Flacco, Ravens: Baltimore thought he would take his game to the next level in his fourth season, but over his last four outings he has thrown for only one TD, with four interceptions, and is on pace to finish with the worst completion percentage and most interceptions of his career.

It’s tough to argue the statistics, but there are some names ahead of Flacco that are pretty bad.  Christian Ponder, Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan, Matt Cassel and Andy Dalton are all guys that I see below Flacco’s abilities.

Flacco finished ahead of Colt McCoy, Kevin Kolb, Sam Bradford, Tarvarious Jackson, Blaine Gabbert, Curtis Painter, Rex Grossman, John Beck, Tim Tebow and Carson Palmer.

Knowing that this list of based only one the first half of the season, do you agree with Trotter’s assessment of Flacco?

Fantasy Football Week 7 Pickups

Sam Bradford (STL QB)- He’s been cut a lot this season. He’s starting to get back to being the same guy that carried a lot of fantasy teams last year. He didn’t throw any TD’s this week but he did get 321 yards. He has a healthy legit big time #1 WR now which will help him with the lack of yards and TD’s that he had in weeks 1-5.

John Beck (WAS QB)- He very well could be the new starter after 4 Rex Grossman interceptions in week 6. Beck didn’t look too bad going 8/15 with 177 yards and a rushing TD. He has a weak schedule coming up so that could pad the stats.

Christian Ponder (MIN QB)- It’s about time Donovan McNabb is benched. That makes Ponder the new starter. Like any other rookie use them with caution. Ponder is in no way a starter. He is only a good pickup if all the starting QB’s in your league are taken.

So Long Donte Stallworth

So it seems that the Donte Stallworth era in Baltimore is over. Aaron Wilson is reporting on Twitter that Stallworth has agreed to a deal with the Redskins.

Stallworth was not utilized in Cam Cameron’s offense. He was known as the “reverse guy” and not much else. Now, he gets John Beck throwing him darts. Watch out world!

Any of you think that this was a mistake by Ozzie to let him go?

Introducing the Baltimore-D.C. Top XXV

Every once in a while I like to do something very fun and very unscientific.  This is one of those instances.  I give you the inaugural edition of the Baltimore-D.C. Top XXV.  This is essentially a power ranking of every pro athlete in the area.  Powerful in what area you ask?  Well, I’m not totally sure.  This is sort of a combination of on-field performance, fan appeal, contribution to local sports history, off-field profile, general “relevance,” etc.  The criteria is spotty at best.  I do not deny this.

I will also not apologize for it, because it was way too much fun.  Basically, I took the active rosters of the 7 major pro teams in the Baltimore-D.C. Metro Area (Orioles, Ravens, Capitals, Wizards, Nationals, Redskins, D.C. United) and tried to pull out the Top 25 (or XXV, because it seems to carry more weight, also “V” rhymes with “D.C.”).  I tried to do this on a weighted scale, otherwise, with the popularity of the NFL, this list would probably by 18 Ravens, 5 Redskins and 2 Orioles.  Please be coherent in the comments in providing your arguments for or against rankings or inclusion.  I understand not everyone loves soccer, hockey, the NBA, or was aware of the existence of the Washington Nationals.  Jayson Werth can’t just pick up and play QB for the Redskins (or could he?!), so let’s try and judge players within their own sport (understanding that the area and its fans will always care about some sports and teams more than others).  The reason I am spending words here on soliciting good feedback is that I’d love to include your passion and guidance in updating this for volume two (probably some time in the fall).

On to the Top XXV, volume one!

Baltimore Ravens Trade QB John Beck

The Ravens have agreed to send back-up QB John Beck to the Washington Redskins in order to acquire more depth at the depleted cornerback position.  In return for Beck the Ravens will receive DB Doug Dutch, who was on the ‘Skins practice squad last year after being undrafted out of Michigan in 2009.  Dutch is a native of Hyattsville, MD and played highschool ball at DeMatha.  I do not see Dutch being much more than depth for training camp and a practice squad player.  He only played defensive back for 1 year at Michigan.  Prior to that he was a wide receiver.

Ravens Shut Out Skins

Seven months after walking off the field in Pittsburgh, losers of the AFC Championship game, the Baltimore Ravens took to the field Thursday night ready to begin a new season which they hope leads to Miami.

If a preseason game can count as an indicator, the Ravens looked the part. Joe Flacco, Troy Smith and John Beck led a Ravens offense, which quietly gained 500 total yards. While Greg Mattison’s defense preserved the shut out as the Ravens beat the Redskins 23-0 at M&T Bank Stadium.

While many were hoping to see Joe Flacco take the next step, even if it were only in a preseason game, Troy Smith was outstanding. Smith completed 14/30 passes for 200 yards, including a 19 yard touchdown pass to Justin Harper.

The Ravens defense showed no ill effects from switching from the blitz crazy Rex Ryan, to the more base oriented defense of Greg Mattison. They forced two turnovers, including a Derek Martin interception and a Dwan Edwards fumble recovery.

Even though it was the first preseason game, all 80 Ravens players were able to do what led to success during last years playoff run, physically dominate their opponent. On Thursday night the Redskins were dominated, and the Ravens are off and running.
