I used to dog on Rex Ryan for scooping up the Ravens scraps and attempting to build a quality team around them. I guess Bart Scott really taught him a lesson.
This offseason it seems as though the San Diego (Super) Chargers have followed Ryan’s plan. They’ve signed three ex-Ravens just days into free agency.
Those three former Ravens will join former Baltimore linebacker Antwan Barnes. Sarah Ellison of BaltimoreRavens.com points out that Barnes was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL draft.
The Ravens dealt Barnes to Philadelphia in 2010 after he was stuck on John Harbaugh’s doghouse (that part wasn’t on BR.com). He later signed with the Chargers after being released by the Eagles.
While Tebow-mania dominated the football season, Lin-sanity has taken over the slowest sports time of the calendar year. The guys break down Jeremy Lin’s rise to the top, discuss the latest Orioles news, talk some Terps football and of course Kate Upton’s SI swimsuit issue cover.
Here are some of the topics discussed on this week’s show.
There aren’t many days that go by that Terrell Suggs doesn’t take a jab at someone. On Wednesday, it was his former teammate Le’Ron McClain who left as a free agent to play for the Kansas City Chiefs this season. That’s not working out so well.
“He’s fit into our locker room which has a lot of characters. He’s a fullback who doesn’t think he’s a tailback,” Suggs said according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times. Suggs of course if referring to McClain, who became vocal about wanting more carries with the Ravens in his later years. #McClain4RB was the twitter hashtag and McClain4RB.com became a fun site to promote Le’Ron’s endless endeavor.
McClain responded on twitter that he and Suggs “are boys.” He says he’s focused on the future and it appears that Sizzle’s latest round of smack talk may have been lighter than we all hoped.
Before kickoff on Sunday, BaltimoreSportsReport.com’s Ravens reporter Edgar Walker gave his thoughts on the Ravens offseason losses and gains as well as his expectations for the 2011 season.
When fans and analyst refer to the NFL’s “parity,” they are usually talking about a balance of competition among the league’s 32 teams. One of the things I appreciate about the NFL so much is actually its parity in the most basic sense. 32 divided by two, divided by four, divided by four – a perfect equation for a mathematically balanced grouping of teams. With this harmonious balance, you begin to see patterns develop. The divisions, while different in the details, fall into similar dynamics. Each one is kind of a bizarro version of the next, like on “Seinfeld” when Elaine found the other group of guys to hang out with. So, who are the Ravens’ “Feldman” in the other divisions? Over the past decade, much has been made of Ozzie Newsome’s brilliant drafting skills. The thought is that even in the later rounds, Ozzie manages to find guys who can make not only a long-term impact on the team, but also an immediate one. Lately, a few commenters on this site (and many others in the Ravens’ fan community), have started to second-guess some of the Ravens’ decisions in the Draft.
So, today we’ll take a look at how Ravens draftees over the past five years (not counting 2011′s Draft) have done in the NFL, and judge whether Ozzie and Co. have been successful in the Draft.
Due to the lockout putting teams on a tight deadline to make signings, NFL free agency this year is pretty much impossible to follow. Here at BSR, we’ll try to help you out with our Free Agent Tracker. Here we track the comings and goings of Ravens free agents, meaning you can keep up with who leaves Baltimore, and who will be a new face in the purple and black.
Currently, you’ll see a few “2011 Team” spaces left blank. As players agree to contracts and sign those contracts, we’ll update that space.
***Additionally, you’ll see Casey Rabach’s name crossed out. This is because he failed his physical after agreeing to a contract, and therefore will not be playing with the Ravens this season.***
Gaither visited with the Oakland Raiders last week, but signed a deal with the Chiefs today. The former University of Maryland star struggled with injuries during his time with the Ravens as he missed all of last season with a thoracic disc injury in his back.
Le’Ron McClain officially departed Baltimore yesterday as he signed a one year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. The two-time Pro Bowler became outspoken in Baltimore and worked his hardest to prove that he was more than just a full back as he rallied for more touches throughout his career.
The Ravens looked as though they were considering bringing McClain back to Baltimore this season, until last week when they signed free agent full back Vonta Leach. With that signing, the Ravens have shown that there are shifting their former hybrid style running game to a more traditionally bruising style.
It seems like there’s an over abundance of Twitter news today. Here’s the latest. Last night, the Ravens official Twitter page, 1WinningDrive, tweeted the following:
Unlike @LeRonMcClain33, newest #Raven @vleach44 is only interested in playing FB and blocking the way for @RayRice27
I have to admit, when it first came across my stream I couldn’t help but think that the tweet was a bit of a dig at Le’Ron McClain. Apparently, McClain agreed with me, “I put in work for the Ravens for 4 years!! Great 4 years. So don’t play me like that*,” McClain responded.
You wanted to see some free agent rumors? Well you got ‘em. The Ravens are apparently one of five teams rumored to be in the running for free agent fullback Vonta Leach according to Fox 26 in Houston.
Other teams reportedly in the mix are Houston, Dallas, Denver and the New York Giants. The Ravens could be limited in negotiations because they’re about $4 million under the salary cap.
“There are multiple teams expressing interest in Vonta,” said Ralph Vitolo, Leach’s agent. “We are still hopeful Vonta can return to the Texans, if at all possible.”
Leach made the Pro Bowl last season as the fullback for Arian Foster. He’s noted as the top free agent fullback on the market. The Ravens are also reportedly talking with Chris Carr about re-signing with Baltimore this season as well.
Veteran fullback and former Raven Lorenzo Neal has been all over the news lately. His named appeared in headlines most recently due to a DUI on the 4th of July, he claims that he wasn’t drunk. Neal also appeared at Ray Rice’s football camp on Monday at Towson University where he addressed all sorts of issues surrounding the Ravens.
One of Neal’s quotes in the Sun that stuck out the most was about his former teammate Le’Ron McClain.
“Le’Ron has got to realize that I don’t know if he’ll ever be a great tailback. He can be good,” Neal said. “If he doesn’t get faster and doesn’t get more elusive, he’ll play another three years in the league and he’s done. If he beefs up, lifts weights and focuses on getting stronger, he can play eight, nine, 10 years at the fullback position.”
That didn’t sit to well with McClain, who tweeted that if Neal’s opinion mattered, he would have been out of Baltimore.
This seems to be another example of Le’Ron McClain’s short temper on the internet. He told Adam Schefter of ESPN in May that he “love exposing black dudes” in response to Schefter’s reporting on Plaxico Burresses release from prison.
In February, we asked if Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain was talking his way out of Baltimore. He responded to us, though he didn’t really answer the question. Monday, McClain again took to twitter to make some controversial remarks to ESPN’s NFL analyst Adam Schefter about Plaxico Burress.
Schefter tweeted the news that Burress was scheduled to be released from prison in two weeks and included his inmate number. That apparently didn’t sit well with McClain.
@AdamSchefter y do u have 2 Expose his prison number to the world I think you get a kick out of that. Man has done his time.. Come on!! SMH
While you could agree with McClain in the above tweet, he took it a bit further just minutes later.
He love exposing black dudes. Never tell the good but his job is to keep bringing past issues up our people Have.. SMH.. Come On my man!!!
Baltimore Ravens vocal fullback Le’Ron McClain has been active in the twitterverse this offseason and he’s recently launched a new website with details about his new role in a web reality series. McClain’s website, LeRonMcClain.com, featured a post about the new series entitled “Behind the Jersey” produced by Gearshift Productions.
WG Management, run by Walik Gibson, reached out to DC based Gearshift Productions to produce video, photo and website content. Gearshift produces HD content for athletes and celebrities that improve their image creatively. Jim Folliard & Don Napoleon can help.
