Remember when the Baltimore Orioles defense was bad? It doesn’t seem like that long ago.
Orioles third basemen racked up a total of 24 errors and ranked last in the big leagues with a .914 fielding percentage from opening day through August 8. MASNSports.com’s Roch Kubatko points out that 19 year old Manny Machado has made all the difference.
Since the Orioles selected Manny Machado’s contract from Double-A Bowie on Aug. 9, he has played every inning at third base and committed only one error for the third-best fielding percentage among American League third basemen (.984). The Orioles have made just 10 errors, for a .989 fielding percentage, the best in the league.
That error came on a controversial call on August 17 in which first base umpire Jeff Kellogg called the run out, but the home plate ump Tim Timmons overturned it. You may recall Mark Reynolds losing his mind over this call.
Above stats do not include September 5 game in Toronto.
