The outlook for Orioles starting pitcher Brian Matusz appeared bright last week, as we reported that the left handed pitcher could return to Baltimore’s rotation this week. Unfortunately, that has since changed. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun is reporting that Matusz has not been cleared to begin throwing sessions at Baltimore’s spring training complex in Sarasota.

Matusz suffered a strained intercostal muscle that landed him on the disabled list on Opening Day this season. Orioles starting pitchers have suffered during Baltimore’s current seven game losing streak, making the news of Matusz’s setback more disappointing.  Drew Silva of Hardball Talk reports that Matusz is likely at least three weeks from returning with the recent news of his set back.

Zrebiec reports that Showalter told the Sun that Matusz is feeling mild discomfort which set back his rehab schedule. The Orioles are taking a cautious and slow approach to easing the 24 year old back to the hill.
