The last 24 hours certainly have been emotional for the Washington Capitals as Bruce Boudreau was fired and Dale Hunter takes over as head coach. Boudreau’s dismissal says more about the underperformance of the Capitals starts than it does about his failures as a coach, but nonetheless he took the blame for Washington’s slumps.
The decision to fire Boudreau may have been something that pleased captain Alex Ovechkin. Boudreau and Ovi reportedly didn’t see eye-to-eye during Bruce’s final days/weeks/months as the Caps head coach. But not everyone in the Capitals locker room was okay with his dismissal, Matt Hendricks and Brooks Laich were visibly upset according to reporters at the Ketler Ice Complex on Monday.
“I owe a lot to him in my career, not just at this level, but the building blocks, he’s given me a lot,” Matt Hendricks told 106.7 The Fan’s Sky Kerstein.
Tonight it doesn’t matter. The Capitals take the ice against the St. Louis Blues with Hunter as their new head coach. A new era begins.
