The Jamie Moyer experiment is over in Baltimore. The Orioles signed the 49-year-old pitcher to a minor league contract on June 6 and granted him his release two weeks later.
Moyer made three starts for the Orioles Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, and went 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings pitched.
The Orioles contract with Moyer allowed him the option to ask for his release after three minor league starts if he had not been called up to the big leagues. The O’s were hoping that Moyer would accept one more minor league start as they do not need a five man rotation until next weekend, but he asked for his release and it was given.
Personally, I would have liked to see Moyer pitch for the Orioles. I’m still not a believer in Tommy Hunter’s abilities and thought that it couldn’t hurt to see what the guy had to offer. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.
This is the eighth time in his career that Moyer has either been released or traded.
Moyer must of had teams lined up to sign him if he couldn’t make one more start. I guess he ran out of time, but hell, he had all the time in the world at age 49. Just as well, the O’s shouldn’t have signed anyone that age, even to a minor league contract. It takes away playing time away from the youngsters. Next, I hope Tejeda takes a hike!
I would give Moyer a shot of Geritol and call him a cab. I don’t care if he can pitch or not, take a pass on him. Call up Tillman!
