Good news from the warehouse on Monday, Jeff Zrebiec of the Sun tweeted that Orioles President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail would like to begin contract extension talks with shortstop J.J. Hardy prior to the All-Star break.
#Orioles GM Andy MacPhail wants to start contract extension talks with SS J.J. Hardy before All-Star break. Hardy is FA after this season.
The O’s signed Hardy to a one year $5.85 million deal this offseason and he has proven to be arguably their best acquisition. The 28-year-old shortstop has hit .287 for the birds this year, with a .363 on base percentage, six homers and 19 RBI in just 36 games. Hardy typically hits 7th, 8th or 9th in the O’s lineup, but he has hit leadoff and 2nd in six games this season.
I’ve got to agree with Zrebiec’s tweet, Hardy will be perfect to bridge the gap between now and shortstop prospect Manny Machado’s debut, which is likely two years away. Machado is hitting over .300 at low-A ball this season and is projected to be an Alex Rodriguez type of impact player. Having a guy as steady as Hardy around until Machado comes up is a perfect for the organization.
Hopefully the two sides can nail out a deal soon.
appreciate for sharing these tips
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. I think he would want a minimum of 3 years, so lets see if Angelos-McPhail put their money where their mouth is…
I would love to see the O’s aquire Hardy for another couple years he has been an exciting player to watch and very solid in the field, it has been a long time since we have had a productive defensive shortstop and Hardy looks like a great fit thus far.
