Analysis: The second of two second round draft picks in the 2010 draft, Cody was acknowledged coming out of college as being one of the top two or three best defensive tackles in the draft. At Alabama, he performed very well at the point of attack, making it difficult for opposing teams to run on him.

His specialty in college was plugging the middle to stop the run, something the Ravens are expecting him to do in the NFL. While he has the ability to push the pocket, he is not much of a pass rusher. He wasn’t an every down player at Alabama, and is expected to be part of a rotation that includes Haloti Ngata and Kelly Gregg. Cody’s training camp experience didn’t get off to a good start, as he failed the conditioning test the first day and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. He has since passed the test and was active in the team’s first preseason game last night.

2010 Outlook: If he can pick up the defense and controls his weight and conditioning, Cody can be expected to see playing time as part of the rotation mentioned above. He will be expected to occupy up to two linemen at the point of attack, to allow the linebackers to make plays behind him.  There may be occasions where he will line up as fullback in short yardage and goal line situations, something he did in college as well. The Ravens were happy he was available when they drafted him, and are expecting him to become and integral part of the defense for years to come.
