The New York Times is reporting that the National Hockey League and Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League are working out the details on opening the 2011-2012 season in Russia with two games between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers.

Negotiations to send the Rangers and the Washington Capitals to Russia to begin the 2011-12 season are near a conclusion, with a decision expected within two weeks, officials of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League said Tuesday.

The NHL did confirm that their senior vice president for NHL International, Ken Yaffe, did meet with KHL President, Alexander Medvedev, and KHL vice president for marketing and communication, Ilya Kochevrin, in New York to discuss the details of the agreement.

The Washington Post also reports that the Capitals may also play an exhibition game in Sweden prior to their season opener abroad.
